fuel level sensor?

So on my 04 coupe with only 66k on it, I top off the tank till gas spills out and needle wont go to the top. Has any one had this problem on the 1st Gen, and is it a DIY job? Thanks for the help

I also had this issue but just under 60k - the dealer replaced the "fuel sender unit" under warranty. Trouble is they did not calibrate the gauge properly so full is above the full line but empty is just under a quarter tank. Quite annoying! I have run out of gas twice because of it (I think I've learned my lesson now!) I am looking for a way to recalibrate the gauge. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm not sure about the "right" way to fix it. I know you could open up the tank and mess with the float until it read correctly. It's more of a trial and error process.

Definitely not a DIY job unless you're really technical. I had mine replaced under warranty.

Easy!
Lift up your rear seat
remove the sucker out the cAr
there are two caps, remove the passenger side cap, 4 black tabs you need to turn
disconnect wires
disconnect fuel line (be careful it'll spray some that is pressured in the line) butdont worry it's not much. Use a rag to cover while disconnecting so it don't get in your face!
Use rag to clean up excess fuel spillage
take out all six screws and put them some where safe!
Lift the thing out, it might take some jenga skills to help manuver the unit out...
Clean the fuel level sensor with a q tip... (use a few)
fuel level sensor should be next to the floating assembly arm, you should be able to tell. Looks like a graph type thing . Haha

reverse the steps and you should be good to go
hope thishelps

Thanks!

^^if you're not parked on an even level, it will not read correctly... say if you are on an incline with the rear on the lower end of the ramp, the gauge will read low. If its still that much off, you may need a new sensor/sending unit.

I fixed this problem on my car and both of my friend's G coupes. One 03 and another 05.

Simply replace both driver and passenger side Fuel Sending Units along with the O rings. The fuel level issue is a common problem on the G. The 4 parts should cost about ~$250. Replacing it is easy too.

khaled: clean the part of the sensor where there is a graph-like scale where the arm meets the assembly, the q-tip will clean the carbon buildup off the sensor, be careful with the black plastic pipe attached to passenger side pump unit, i believe mine went above the float when I put it back into the tank so my fuel level readings are still inaccurate.
