Re: WOW! 350Z airbox install

It's just a modified OEM piece, so the intake filter is still right up front. In that pic, it's surrounded by large weatherstip material (or foam pipe insulation or roll-bar padding?) to help seal the filter from under-hood air and to help maintain the stock pressurized intake box condition, along with making sure that the path through the air filter is the path of least resistance.

I'm stuck on this one. One one hand, I have to agree that it's not helping underhood cosmetics. On the other, I'm usually all about form being a result of function; choosing power and effeciency over style.

But I've been that route before and I have been leaning towards trying to focus more on cosmetics when I get my G. So is it a titanium exhaust or multiple carbon fiber replacement pieces? Life's filled with hard choices. lol

Re: WOW! 350Z airbox install

Ok ....back up....we have it al running together and mingled.
I think Speed.. was talking about he didn't get the installation of the 350Z airbox, and how it could possibly help.
I say that I have tried almost everything and my modified stock box and insulation work best for me.
Also the previous pic that Suckinrain said he would be ashamed of, was a "work in progress". The finished product looks much better.
LOL

OldVFRGuy,
Did you mod your intake other than the heat sheilding and K&N Filter? Is the intake temp guage something you installed aftermarket?

"You would ....would you????
My Z tube and intake air temp stays approx. 30% cooler= More Power.
Function over being a "poser""

What do you mean by 30% cooler? 30% cooler than what?
30% cooler than hot is still hot. How much power do you think this 30% cooler air is gaining you? 0.1 second in a 1/4 mile?

I mean, really, it's hot out now and that's all there is to it. Nothing you can do is going to make a noticable difference.

To humans.

When it gets cold again everybody will be raving about all their butt dyno gains. And pop chargers will rule once again...

Putting that crap on there and expecting a difference makes you an ALIEN. Having you car look good does not make you a poser, it makes you HUMAN.

DUD
What the hell...??? You have been watching the Sci-Fi channel too much.....Human...Alien?????
My engine is neither...it is a machine. Cold air makes it happy.
And the 30% cooler is the average measurment using my HVAC buddy's temp sensor. The intake air averaged approx. 30% cooler accross the board, after I insulated the Z tube and air box.
Pop chargers ingest way too much hot air.....but enjoy your intake noise and be happy

Re: WOW! 350Z airbox install

anybody have any pix of the 350z intake box not installed? im not understanding how the air gets into the box. the part where i think the box is opened to get air doesnt make sense to me. isnt that part of the engine sealed off except for that little hole that the orignal intake box attached to? it might be better to just chop that resonator off of our stock boxes. im goign to try it...but what could i seal it up with?

Re: WOW! 350Z airbox install

OldVFR,

I was trying to say that no CAI helps when it's 100F outside.

What do you think my performance hit is for 30% hotter air?

Noticable?

I think not.

How about in the winter when it's 30F outside. Will 30% cooler air help?

I think not.

Re: WOW! 350Z airbox install

I'd have to agree. That insulation just doesn't cut it for me. I'd rather run the Nismo CAI from closer to the bottom of the car for a bit cooler air. I hope you're "feeling" the results of 30% cooler air because I'm sure most of us can't.

Re: WOW! 350Z airbox install

I say don't seal it and see how you like it. I get some great growl that may be attributed to the open hole...never plugged tho to see as anything I stick in there will get stuck and I am sick of taking that box out and in and out. I have the foam removed from the below the bumper area where the injen CAI used to breathe. My tehtom shows the intake air temp moves immediately lower as soon as you push the gas and can drop 30 degrees in one run to 80 on a hot day. The hole ain't hurtin anything at a minimum - or you could plug it with a muffler or tire patch and some epoxy like I did with my G tube resonator holes. Works like a charm

Re: WOW! 350Z airbox install

To compare a G35coupe vs 350Z airbox and intake: reference these documents: (PDF format)

Attached: (changed to "linked)
2004 350Z Air Cleaner & Air Duct page (EM-15) from shop manual. (references pg BL-17, below)

2004 350Z Radiator Core Support (BL-17) from shop manual.

2004 G35c Air Cleaner & Air Duct page (EM-15) from shop manual.

2004 G35c Air Cleaner & Air Duct page (EM-16) from shop manual.

Seems the 350Z air duct (inlet) goes through the 350Z frame (the Radiator Core Support Center)
The 350Z airbox inlet seems to sit lower than the G35c inlet.

Can anyone make the comparison from these documents and determine which is better with the Ztube, the G35c stock airbox setup, or the switched to the 350Z airbox system?

Re: WOW! 350Z airbox install

from those diagrams, my opinion is that it is better to stick with the OEM pieces specifically designed for our cars. the only mod i would make would be to plug up those stupid resonators to create a smaller, more direct flowing box such as the 350z has.

the air duct inlet on the 350z intake is positioned to take air from a certain part of the 350z bumper, which im sure the G35 bumper is not designed to do. you would have to chop a big hole in the front fiberglass part of the g35 engine bay.

does anyone work with plastics and know how to chop off everything below where the filter is on the G35 stock intake box and cover it up with another piece of plastic to creat a pressure effect? that would give us a nice grow i think and perhaps a itty bitty tiny bit of extra power =)
