Threw codes P0011/P0021, need a little assistance

I threw a SES yesterday and pulled the codes. Came up P0011- "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
and P0021-"A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2) This is what I found to be the explanation: "This check engine light code is caused by a mechanical fault of the VCT unit or related components, so there is no need for electrical diagnosis. Possible symptoms may include rough idle, stall or hard start. Refer to manufacturer specific component tests for the VCT unit."

I cleared the codes yesterday after reading them and the car drove fine. No return of the SES light. This morning after starting the car, SES is back showing the same codes.

I replaced my cam covers this weekend with polished covers and wondered if I could have moved something that wasn't supposed to be moved. The covers seemed to be easy to remove and replace, pop the old ones off, apply some new RTV, and reinstall the new covers. The car runs great; no issues with idle, power, weird vibration, or anything else.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

I had the same problem, my car would die when I would slow down. But I only had to replace one side. The part cost about $80 but easy to swap out. took about 30 mins. good luck!

Thanks for the heads up but I don't think that's the issue. My car runs great, no issues at all. Also there are completely different codes that would show if it was the cam position sensor.

I might have isolated the issue but am waiting to fix it. I didn't transfer the "seal rings" that fit onto the end of the stems at the back of the cam covers when I swapped them out. I'm waiting for these to come back to me and we'll see if that fixes the issue. I'll update here with the answer. The top of the shaft where the groove is is what I'm talking. There should be a ring snapped in there.

A silly mistake on my part. Behind the small round piece of the cam cover there is a little metal ring called an "oil seal". It had fallen out when I was replacing the covers and I didn't catch that fact. Bought a new one at Nissan for like $3, replaced it, and haven't had a problem since.

Let us know what you find out is wrong with yours if you pinpoint the issue.

Wow I forgot about this thread. I'd clear the codes and see if they come back. Also, make sure your oil level is correct.

Ok i found this trying to find out the problem with my car same codes. But I replaced both cam position sensors a few months ago. So I don't see how it could be that. However I started getting the rattle in the cab about a week before the codes popped. Thought may have been the ac fan. But the codes popped so I am at a loss. I ran seafoam through the oil and changed it have a fresh batch of oil with seafoam in it and will change again in a few days since my wife doesn't run the car much but no change with about 60 miles in it now. I Can't imagine it being the new position sensors and I locked the harnesses which is a pain in the *** to unlock to begin with so I don't see that happening. So what are my other possible issues? I know I loose oil and not on the ground but somewhere inside the engine itself and none in the coolant.
