Clifford remote start - cranks but wont fire

2005 G35X - when I bought the car it was already fitted with a Clifford alarm/remote start system. I'm not 100% sure of the model, but I think its a Responder LE 3.3X. The remote starter was a great feature during last winter, and even during the summer months. Its always worked flawlessly until the other day.

When I try to remote start it now, the car wont fire. Hit the remote start button on the remote and after a couple of seconds the car cranks two or three times - but it doesn't start. After a short time, it tries again - cranks two or three times, but doesn't start. It eventually gives up.

This morning I put a spare key in the ignition (not turned on) and the remote start worked fine. I gather from research on-line that this is most likely something to do with the bypass module - but where do I start to correct the problem? Or should I take it somewhere that specializes in these things?

When that happens to mine it means the car battery is going out...

You'll either have a bypass module with a chip-key enclosed in it or a more expensive bypass module that doesn't use a key to fake out the transponder anti-theft system. Good troubleshooting with the key in the ignition to find that it would start that way.

Most installers throw the "brain" and bypass module under the steering wheel area where it's somewhat easily accessible. You can certainly take a look to see if anything is loose or needs to be reseated. Could be a wire-tap isn't making contact. Bypass module could also be bad. If you find that your bypass module is the key inside box style, you could remove the key and verify that the key (chip) works to start the car.

Just to close this one out....

Got in touch with my local Clifford alarm authorized retailer - they told me it would be $400 to $500 to diagnose and repair the problem and I'd probably be better off installing a new system (for an estimated $300).

Contacted another local remote starter installation shop - not Clifford retailers, but they said they'd take a look at it. They quickly determined it must be bypass related and called Clifford support - after 10 minutes on the phone, they reprogrammed the unit and the problem is fixed.

Total cost $25 and I now have my remote start back in time for winter
