What scrapes when you go over a speed bump? Is it BAD for my car?

My g35Coupe is lowered on 350z Tein S Techs.

When i go over some speed bumps or across the apex of some driveways, the undercarriage of my car scrapes.

(sound familiar to your car so far?)

My question: What is actually scraping? Is it really bad to scrape the undercarriage? Should i be concerned in general if i get a little scrapey scrapey?

(just trying to weigh the cost/damage of having a lowered car vs. the 'cool' and performance factors)

thanks,
-chris

PS: and yes i go slow and at an angle, just sometimes its unavoidable as you may know if you have a lowered car. Some speed bumps are just deathly.

When I was lowered on HKS coilovers, I'd scrape. The thing that scraped was the H-pipe. Depending on angle it would scrape the headers, but nothing major.

I recently took off all those parts and noticed only scrapes and by the looks of it, it didn't actually bent anything to affect the flow/performance.

I was heading down a steep driveway and at the top the whole car was stuck in the middle! I had to slowly reverse and it broke my heart to hear the horrible noises as I was doing it. Turns out that everything was ok. Moral is to CHECK the angle first. Speed humps: unless you get out n measure the clearance you have to take yr chances.

Actually, you also scrape the rear support brace... i think that's what it's called. Looks like a cross between the letters U and V. Mine had been scraped so badly that I wasn't able to get the rear axle click TSB done, without paying for them to cut off the bolts holding the brace in place since they had been scraped so badly.

Thanks for that afropuff. I'd better take a closer look......Nissan shld have put some sort of plastic trim down there so as a warning before major damage is done

But at the same time, NYC/NJ potholes ain't your typical potholes. Michael Phelps could swim laps in some of the ones on the FDR.

I scrape from time to time, after a while you just get to know where you can drive and where you can't.

There anythign you can do to prevent alot of scraping on the ings sides. For example take the garage door lip mod for the front bumper but 3m tape it on the underside of the sid skirt laying flat not sticking down. It wont look real noticeable but youd have a rubber cover at least to protect more?

Anyone try stuff like that?

That rear support brace catches hell, mine looks like crap but its OK, it does sound bad when scraping on things but it does not hurt the car except for those bolts mentioned which will get bad in time... Nissan did a good job keeping the under body clear of things that would scrape or tear up!

^^^
I scrape occasionally... I hope it's not my X-pipe and is instead just the rear support brace... Next time I'm home I've gotta check!

When I scrape I feel it in the shifter... don't think that's a good thing. My school installed new bumps in our parking lot (ridiculously huge), which scrape my cats and my front support brace (i think?), so they pretty much prevented me from parking in the only lot at school and banished me to the street... bastards.
