Head light tint removal glue residue problem!

Hey everyone,

I had head light tint on my car for around 2 weeks and decided I didn't like it. When I took it off, glue residue was left over...

I used goo gone on the head light to try and remove the glue residue, and while some of it came off just fine, a lot of it smeared.

I've tried goo gone, glass cleaner, bleach, alcohol, a blowdryer and goo gone, and a pressure washer, and no luck removing it..

Any ideas? maybe ammonia or wet sanding and polishing? I'll post pics of the head light asap.

I've used windex and it's worked fine. Do not ever use brake/carb cleaner, you'll smear your headlight's clear film off and end up permanently hazing it.

Go to a local motorcycle shop, they should have a citrus base sticker remover. It's made for removing stickers off of dirt bikes. It works great.

Not sure if it will mess up the headlight but gasoline works too to remove the residue.

Or you could use wet/dry sandpaper like one of our members....No Don't! Take a very clean rag and try the GooGone one more time, if that doesn't woik WD 40 should due the trick without damaging the Plastic headlight covers. Once the glue is gone use some Meguiar's PlastX to remove any fine scratches you may have caused....then a coat of paste wax should complete this task....

i've tried goo gone (EXTREME VERSION, lol)

and it didnt seem to clear it up very well, it just resmeared..

i think ammonia might do the trick. if not i'll try the WD40.. i'll let everyone know how it works.. thanks for the help!

and thanks gary, i definitely heard of wetsanding, and now i know NOT to do it. haha

goo gone works you just have to really soak it and let it sit a few minutes...and keep doing it over and over

here's an update,

i've tried: ammonia, two types of goo gone, and plastX....

nothing seems to work.... the goo gone seems to have some sort of effect, except it simply resmears and then recakes..

its almost like the glue has formed a caked layer over the head light like you can see in my pictures... when i use goo gone, the glue seems to loosen up, then resmears, then recakes and then theres nothing i can do to get it off..

I'm going to try it tonight when its cooler and not in the hot miami sun....

So i think i'm pretty much screwed.

nothing I've tried works, the glue simply redries and cakes over again...

here are some pics after countless tries using all sorts of junk..

sadly thats the better looking head light..

anyone!? PLEASE!

JK....haven't you got those cleaned yet, and you didn't try WD40 but used Ammonia instead? It's not a good idea to use anything household on a vehicle! When I installed my eyebrows I cleaned the surface of my headlights with rubbing alcohol as recommended by the manufacture....won't damage the headlight covers. Still hard to believe GooGone failed to remove the glue, that always works....

Try using goo gone and a hair drier. The heat for making it soft and the Goo Gone to lift it away.

Oh i tried WD40 also, i forgot to mention that... it didn't do anything either...

i tried ammonia, because I know for removing window tint a lot of people use ammonia to help with the glue.. but it didnt do anything anyways..

I tried rubbing alcohol, but it didn't do anything either..

tried goo gone and a hair drier... also did goo gone in the blazing hot miami sun.. but neither worked.. its pretty insane cause I know goo gone always works... the problem is the goo gone kind of breaks up the glue a little, but then it redries and simply resmears when i try to buff it out, and then it simply recakes. just check out the pictures...

i think i might be in biiiiig trouble..
